Yuletide 2018 Letter
Hello, Dear Yuleperson!
Thank you so much for writing for me <3. I adore all of these fandoms, so I look forward to seeing what you do with them! My AO3 account is TLvop, for easy access :).
I’ve set up this letter as Triggers – Do Not Wants –General Likes/Dislikes—Fandom Specific babble & prompts. The only thing I ask you definitely pay attention to is the Triggers – the DNWs and General Dislikes are varying degrees of "generally no, but if the fic of your heart says yes, go for it".
Triggers: Non-consensual sexual interaction & anything under-18 sexual. My brain can get pretty ridiculous here, so please avoid on-screen sex/near sex to be safe – you can feel free to hand-wave it off screen or fade to black early. Ryfkah (send a message on DW at skygiants) is a volunteered me-expert in this area, if you’re at all worried! She’s great, and you’ll be fine <3. To clarify!: Both Hexwood and Altered Carbon have characters important to my requested who have sexual violence in their background; I'm okay with that being acknowledged if relevant to the plot, but don't want it to in any way be a plot driver.
Do Not Want: Active mockery (versus brief, stated dislike) of either religion or atheism, stories without hope, graphic violence, major (non-canonical) character death, and break-ups of canon ships (that are not broken up in canon).
General Likes: Dogs, robots, AIs, world-building, cute flirting between established couples, cheerful flirting between will-they-won't-they's, highly competent partnerships (romantic, professional, friendly, or any combination of the above), friendship, stories that feel very grounded in the world they’re in. Happy stories, bittersweet stories, thoughtful stories, ridiculous romps, casefic, day-in-the-life, all-the-days-in-a-life ... all that good stuff. I also am totally cool with any person, tense, or style you choose to tell the fic in. I prefer the person/tense stay consistent unless you're switching between well-delineated sections, so my brain stays minimally confused :).
General Dislikes: Interpersonal tension between characters without established reasons in the plot; characters presented as being “just evil” without logic (it doesn’t have to be GOOD logic, just that the bad character is internally consistent and a person).
Altered Carbon (Netflix)
Characters Requested: Poe (Altered Carbon)
Why I love this canon: I love how this canon treats identity and bodies, and the ways they are and are not related. There are atrocities that are ameliorated by the invention of stacks, and there are injustices that are further entrenched due to them. ALSO -- I adore all of the unspoken worldbuilding, even though I dislike how little they let us look at it! I want to dig my hands in and see what's actually happening/has changed/how things operate on a fundamental level.
Why I love this character: I have a HUGE WEAKNESS for adorable androids/robots/AI, particularly if they are quiet and friendly and overprotective nerds! Poe is such an interesting character, particularly given the length of his absence from the rest of the AI community and the strange dynamics between him and the other AI characters. It's unclear how those dynamics were formed, to what extent the individual AI have free will (one of them is stated to be "enslaved" by humans, which implies freedom for the others...?), or legal personhood -- as well as to what extent Poe wants to be a part of the community. Also, why is he is interested in gum shoeing? HAS HE EVER DETECTED??? Also, his friendship with Lizzie is a strange and beautiful thing, and I like to imagine that they spent a lot of time being super weird nerds together when not actively destroying imaginary bad guys. I haven't requested Lizzie, so feel no need to write her!
Prompts:
* Case fic - just Poe, or Poe and OC; this could be full gumshoe; noir style; or something more modern! Maybe something about where human lives and AI intersect?
* "Fake case" fic for therapy (controlled exposure to safe unknown people?) because Poe definitely knows how psychology works! [Poe and Lizzie]
* Anything with Poe and Lizzie being friends -- I don't want to see any talk therapy ("tell me about your panic attacks!" type stuff), but I do love the idea that they've spent a long time getting to know each other as something called 'psychosurgery' that seems more like teaching Lizzie control over her environment. Lizzie-Poe is a delight.
* How Poe lost all of his previous guests??? (Clearly, most of the other AI businesses changed with the times)
* Or, Poe and his attempts at Marketing? Or, why Poe can afford to have no guests for decades at a time? Anything with world building and AIs would be fascinating!
* AIs can travel -- how has Poe in the past; how much of the world does he know; how was he established; how has AI society changed?
Hail Caesar! (2016)
Characters Requested: Carlotta Valdez, Hobie Doyle
UP FRONT: I got awesome Hail Caesar fic a few yuletides ago! I'd be happy for more either along the same lines or a totally different take on Hobie&/Carlotta's relationship :)
Why I love this canon: I love this canon primarily due to its slice-of-life aspects, even though the characters involved have really odd lives (but seem very consistently themselves)! I'd never seen a Coen Bros movie before (I know D:), and I'm excited to carve out time in my day to watch more from my experience with this one. It's hard to communicate the rest of what I like in this canon in a way that's useful to fic, but I enjoyed a lot of the visual aesthetic and music if that's at all useful!
Why I love these characters: They're just the cutest, most competent, genuinely sweet people in the movie! I love Carlotta's quick friendliness and ease with Hobie, and from what little we see of her she seems to be so willing to just do the thing which is a trait I find very admirable. I adore Hobie's aw-shucks dorkiness paired with his clear intelligence and discernment about What Evil Lurks In The Heart Of Men. I enjoy the contrast between his clear lack of knowledge about certain tropes/movies/industries and his extreme competence in the things he knows.
Notes: Yeah, I ship it! Adorable friends is also very cool, but if so please don't mention them paired with other people <3. Also, I love DeeAnna and would be delighted by her appearance in any fic (though as I didn't request her, obviously don't feel burdened to!)
Prompts: This one was hard, because I'm genuinely interested in anything with these two interacting!
* the romance of valdez and doyle which I suspect would be the CUTEST THING EVER? A series of scenes or a fully fleshed out storyline -- man, I'd love anything here.
Fun tropes: fake married/dating (--> real feelings), pretty much anything dorky as long as one doesn't think they're dating while the other one does.
Non-pairing-specific prompts (but can be hijacked!):
* Hobie goes to Carlotta's next premiere as her date -- how does it go?
* Any sort of non-mundane AU that maintains their characterization and mild outsiderness -- especially something sort of offkilter, like them in a space western! Or either modern or 1950s urban fantasy (though if so, I'd appreciate if Carlotta is human)! Or something SUPER WEIRD/off-kilter, as long as not grimdark. (For example, I once wrote an AU where Clint Barton used to be a parakeet. You do not need to do that, but I'm super okay with weird AUs.)
* Future fic! How does Carlotta adapt as her genre is phased out -- does her "image change" lead her into a new genre of films? Does Hobie have any advice? Or, in contrast, has Carlotta already changed genres and have advice for Hobie?
* FOR SOME REASON, Hobie and Carlotta are made to babysit DeeAnna's baby, because obviously they are ~*so wholesome*~ and trustworthy that they know how to deal with babies! Except. Um. Maybe they don't. (or maybe they do, and whatever drives the storyline comes from other tensions!)
* CASEFIC. I don't know what sort of case, but a case that they must solve!
Hexwood -- Diana Wynne Jones
Characters Requested: Vierran of Guarranty
NOTE - Feel free to include Mordion, Artegal, or Martin (though I only ship Vierran/Mordion) -- Please do not include Reigner One in any on-screen way.
Why I love this canon: I first read this canon when my memory was a wreck, and if you ever have the chance (maybe while feverish?) I highly suggest it. You'll find pieces of Hexwood stuck in unexpected corners of your consciousness for the better part of your decade, to be stumbled on with delight like an unexpected five dollars in your coat pocket. For those note in the know: Hexwood is an Arthurian story wrapped up in a sitcom wrapped up in a sci-fi political drama wrapped up once again in an Arthurian story. There's time travel and multiple identities and fantastically terrible clothing choices, and occasional moments of pretty serious angst.
Why I love this character: I think why I love Vierran is that she is both a dreamer and a pragmatist -- she understands when she can't take action (if it's within her context), and refuses to believe that nothing can every be done to save those she loves. She also has GREAT TASTE in fashion. I also adore the extent to which she normalizes her life -- she has to, as a survival tool, but it also gives you the opportunity to explore dropped threads in her narrative of what exactly her childhood was like -- what her place in the universe is -- what her future will look like.
Prompts: This book is SO WEIRD that normal prompts make me feel kind of ridiculous, so please feel free to take this totally side ways -- or go super normal! Either is okay! Or marry the normal and super weird, I am cool with that as well. Anything with Vierran being her absolute delight of a self is going to warm my heart. However, this is a canon where I would not want any AUs, because reality is so shake-y in the book as it is. Reality warping, as happens canonically, is fine! AUs would just be an extra layer too many.
* Obviously, I ship Mordion and Vierran and they are the AWKWARDEST HUMAN BEINGS. How do they work. How does Vierran maintain being her own person under the weight of Mordion's sheer --story protagonist qualities? also, how do they not die of sheer awkward. WHO KNOWS. (You, probably?) Anything from hijinks to a more serious look would be :D
* I'd love world building with Vierran and her story, particularly relatively early on when she first becomes a hostage of the Reigners and has to learn how to be a good costume designer. How does she deal with the political machinations around her? What is her interaction with other hostages? What has she normalized that was originally strange?
* Vierran as a kid with her cousin (!!!). Particularly if mixed in with world building.
* Family gatherings at the House of Guarranty, throughout the years
