Last one on the bandwagon (as usual!)

Since everyone and their mother is doing this:
Name either a character or a relationship between characters (not necessarily romantic) from canons I know and/or Milliways and I will a.) give my rambling opinion of him/her/it and b.) tell you one thing I really like about him/her/it.
Most of you hear my rambling opinions on a semi-regular basis BUT if you are curious! :D!
ALSO I REPLACED MY FAILED GRADE WITH AN 89% AN I AM SO SO GLEEFUL. God totally, like, rocks. *HAPPY* And you all do TOO

on 2007-10-15 09:55 pm (UTC)And you told me I could ask all three! So I am being greedy and also adding Finn-Plourr.
:D?

on 2007-10-15 10:08 pm (UTC)Finn-Plourr first, and I will work at the others as I ponder them. Finn's always been surrounded by strong women in his life: Jaelle is a constant figure while he grows up, far away and held in respect, but still someone he saw and knew like he knew most of the city, and Leila another constant. He categorizes Plourr--unconciously, really, because his memory sucks--in that category. A strong woman is someone you pay attention to, and try not to get on the wrong side of, but they're also someone you trust because they will tell you if you are an idiot so if they say that they like you they mean it. And, a bit strangely, they're people you look out for. Because sometimes they don't know how to ask for help, and they usually don't want people to see that they need it, so you offer it in the most cautious inoffensive way possible.
And kill anyone who messes with them. What I adore about Plourr-Finn is how much Plourr treats Finn like a normal kid and how much Finn, in turn, acts like one. Also she NEVER startles him, which is a tiny detail that makes me <3 her interaction with him so much more!
Hodgins is totally Zach's older brother. Zach wants Hodgins to think the best of him, wants earnestly to be accepted by Hodgins, and is totally willing to dismiss his advice on anything but girls because Hodgins is illogical. He thinks Hodgins is highly intelligent in his own way, and also way trustworthy, and very annoying. Also, Zach does everything within his admittedly small sphere of influence to try not to hurt Hodgins. Like not being his best man in case anything happens in Iraq.
I love them because they race beetles. And blow things up. :D :D :D. And Zach is ALWAYS THE MURDER VICTIM. And the king of the lab contest! And and and. *beams!*
On the other hand, Ben-Riley? Is not quite brotherly at all, though Ben kind of thinks it is. Ben's never had siblings, so he thinks of Riley kind of like his kid brother, but he treats him like an associate and close friend. Ben doesn't understand what Riley does, really, as a computers person, and respects him for that, but he also gets annoyed (not as quickly now as at first) with Riley's utter nonsense. He is highly fond of Riley, though, and now is almost always equally parts amused and annoyed when anything weird happens.
Also, I can totally see how in some alternate universe there would be Ben/Riley but that presupposes that they are both not straight, and I think Ben is.
Favorite part? "Riley." "Been-uh!"

Cora-Edmund!

on 2007-10-16 04:42 am (UTC)Cora has a very silly crush on Edmund, like Cora has a very silly crush on most nice intelligent young men by dint of the fact that she knows very few and, well, she's silly.
Just to get that out of the way.
But beyond that, Edmund is someone who Cora can assume understands what she is talking about which is pretty rare in Milliways, and she can trust him not to be mean. And he is a teahcer, and he likes math, and he draws and in general he is very interesting and not-scary/intimidating because she always forgets he's a king.
I wish we'd been able to explore more their interaction re: king!Edmund, because honestly I am not so sure what Cora would make of that.

on 2007-10-16 04:46 am (UTC)My favorite part about Edmund and Cora is...eru. Probably the talking about random weird books.
Or the conversations that kept us up for THREE NIGHTS IN A ROW UNTIL ALL HOURS OF MORNING. :P
And also just how they had a bizarre sort of friendship that one would assume was older than it was because of the fact that being from the same country in a kind of foreign bar place makes Cora, at least, loads more comfortable with Edmund than most people.
Yes. *shuts up*

on 2007-10-16 06:41 pm (UTC)And I wish too that we'd been able to play around more with the differences between King Edmund the Just and Edmund the artistic tea-drinking chap. (Defy_ka sometime, perhaps?) Just -- there are so many layers there, of what aspects came out around her and what ones didn't, and that kind of thing is so much fun to play with. In general and with them, both.

on 2007-10-16 06:20 am (UTC)My take on Zach and Laini will be entirely from Zach's perspective: I understand Laini's at least marginally well, given your description, but it's not really somehting I can say for certain.
Zach is not good with social situations and honestly Zach is not very good with girls. Not that girls don't flirt with him--he just has difficulty telling when they are, and when he actually notices it is usually so overt that he goes dry-mouthed and doesn't know what to say. Also, it is very rare that he likes a girl because of her personality merely because he has such a habit of "adopting" people who he clicks with on a personal level into his idea of family that he never really ends up attracted to them because that would be weird.
Okay, now that I've explained Zach and girls for the background, I can move on.
Laini is, no point it getting around it, incredibly attractive. So given that Zach was already attracted to her at the time of meeting, the fact that she is interesting and very intelligent and all around made of win did not make her a well-loved sibling-person but more made Zach go "...woah. She is even AWESOMER THAN I THOUGHT SHE WAS." except in Zach speak which uses numerical data and ratios of brains to beauty and mostly puts Laini in the 98th or 99th percentile of women who he has come into contact with.
Also, Zach is kind of the sort of guy to leap into bed with a hot girl who shows an interest! But he at least now days thinks that way if he doesn't actually think of the girl as anything except hot (though he does try to keep contact afterwards either way). He actually really likes Laini, and that is weird for him, so he is being careful. By now he would've usually at least asked her out for coffee but--well, he cares about her. And she's not human, so he wants to feel out her customs before making any wrong moves.
If they ever have a future? I can mostly forecast that Zach is fairly okay with Laini's sort of casual relationship deal because that's who she is and he knew that when he started dating her, but it would be quite a bit more serious from his side of the equation.
That was way too long.
